Leeds couple Hazel and Chris tied the knot on arguably the most romantic day of the year..
Yes, they choose Valentine’s Day 2015 for their happy nuptials.
But it wasn’t always the plan, in fact it was more of a happy coincidence as it fell in Half Term holidays (Hazel is a teacher) and the venue they had set their hearts on was available!
And after a low key proposal in front of none other than 60 of Hazel’s pupils and a handful of her work colleagues, Chris got down on one knee to make it official.
Thank god she said ‘yes’!
Although there was no doubt in Hazel’s mind that she had got her man as she openly admits she had been smitten since their school days.
But it was after years as friends he plucked up the courage to ask her out on a date.
It turned out to be the best decision Chris ever made and they now live in Seacroft together with Chris’ five-year-old daughter Paige living with them part of the week too.
Here’s what Hazel had to say about their big day:
Words cannot begin to describe how amazing the day was for myself and Chris. Everything went perfectly, we had everyone there that we wanted and everything exactly how we wanted. We had saved up for 18 months, and everything exceeded our expectations. We also felt exceptionally humbled at the amount of people who had joined us to celebrate, and helped us with the arrangements.
Marrying Chris, my best friend and the love of my life, in front of all our friends and family, really was a dream come true, and I want to do it all over again!
We went to view The Mercure Parkway Hotel on Otley Road, Leeds as a possible venue. We actually arranged to view their smaller room but when we arrived we fell in love with their Ballroom Suite and we knew there and then that’s where we wanted to get married! The grand staircase and romantic art on the walls just made it the perfect location for us. We sat down and looked at all the possible dates which were out of wedding season, and Valentine’s Day just happened to be available. It was perfect, as it fell in a school holiday, and is also my mum’s birthday. The first venue we saw was the venue we chose!
I am super organised. I had the majority of the big things booked within six weeks! But that was mainly as we were paying for the wedding ourselves, so we wanted to pay off things in instalments. We did have help along the way, Chris’s sister Donna bought us our wedding cake, my mum Lisa bought the fizz for the reception and meal, my bridesmaids pitched in with a lot too. I could not have got through the planning without my bridesmaids too, Emma Moore, Catriona Merryweather and Rebecca Wild. They truly were unbelievable, from helping me with flowers, to booking massages and even buying my underwear, they were my lifeline. They were always there to support, encourage or kick me up the bum if needed!
The Finishing Touches
With the wedding being Valentine’s Day, an obvious theme was red love hearts. Our little wooden place settings which tied around the napkins were made by Tanya from Tanya’s trinkets. We had a message in a bottle instead of a guest book, and my table plan was made by my creative friend Debbie Surtees.
We also had a finger print tree which was donated by Becky Hughes at Canvas Direct UK, and that went down a treat. Me and Chris had our prints in red, and the rest of the party had theirs in green, it’s an amazing lasting memory of our big day
We hired a company to decorate our venue and the owner, Faye made the room look absolutely beautiful.
I chose my wedding dress almost by accident! I went with one of my bridesmaids just to have a look but as I stepped into Precious Bridal in Garforth the owner Donna, made me feel extremely welcome. She knew exactly what would suit my figure, and I found the one that day. I paid and walked out having only gone in for a little browse.
The Hair and Make Up
I had a hair and make up trial with Heather from Peacocks and Lillies. I had already chosen a tiara and a veil, and I had no idea what look I wanted. But we tried a few things, and she was able to do my make up so well, that I felt like a million dollars.
On the morning
Well I couldn’t sleep! It was my mums birthday, so I text her to see if she was up, and tiptoed into her room at about 5.30am! We sat on the bed chatting and laughing drinking a cuppa. I felt oddly relaxed. My bridesmaids joined us later and the wine started flowing about 11.30am.
I also had a brides dressing gown which said ‘Valentines bride’ on the back, and I was really we looked after by my four adult bridesmaids. I knew Chris was in good hands too, as he had stayed at home with his Best Man Jordan and my brother, the usher Robert.
Our ceremony was at 3pm. We wanted a later wedding so we could have a flowing reception. We didn’t have a sit down meal, but instead had a sit down buffet. As I work with a lot of people, and we both have fairly big families, we wanted to make sure we could include everybody. We had 110 adult guests and seven children.
Words of Wisdom
Regarding the planning, always shop around. We got a fab deal on our photobooth and our photographer Joe Brook is normally a nightclub photographer who wanted some more experience photographing weddings, so he gave us a good deal, and his photos are stunning!
Also delegate jobs and choose your bridesmaids well! We certainly made the right decision and their support throughout was gratefully appreciated.
Advice regarding the big day, always get what you want!
You’re the bride and groom, it’s your one and only big day, so enjoy it exactly how you want it. Also it can be a crazy busy day, so make sure at one point, you just stop and take everything in.
